Today is Mother’s Day. The day that honors the people who keep everything together—our Moms. These are the people who always place the needs of their children before their own. Many have a job or profession that takes a big chunk of their time as well.
This is also a time when the spring sports at the collegiate level are closing their seasons with, hopefully, a spot in the NCAA Playoffs. At Todd Team Coaching we have the privilege of working with many of those teams, some of which are coached by women who are also Moms.
I’d like to introduce one of those Mom’s, Nancy McDaniel, the Head Women’s Golf Coach at the University of California, Berkeley. This weekend they completed qualification for the the NCAA Championship. Going into the weekend, her team was ranked 38th and was a longshot to qualify to reach the final round. But, they did and now move on to the Finals. This is not an accident, but a result of extraordinary coaching and teamwork.
We have been privileged to work with Nancy’s team for most of her career. She not only has produced fine teams, but she has a bevy of former players and assistant coaches who are now Head Coaches in their own right. As long as I have been in sports, coaches who produce good coaches are always considered to be at the top of their field.
Nancy has PAC-12 coaches at Stanford University and the University of Oregon. In addition, D-I coaches at UC, Irvine, UC, Davis and the University of San Francisco have come out of Nancy’s program to be successful in their own right. While accomplishing this she has been a great Mom to her son and daughter. All of her accomplishments are a result of her continued commitment to her own development as a coach.
Happy Mother’s Day, Nancy! You are my daily inspiration. Your athletes are blessed to have been touched by your commitment to them as athletes and students, but most of all as people. Someday, down the road a little ways, they will really get what good fortune they had in being a member of your team.
