Is there such a thing as a generation gap?
This past week, my company, Todd Team Coaching was introducing our Building a Championship Team (BCT) program to an internet company called Neighborhoods (www.neighborhoods.com). Three years ago we worked with them when there we just 11 people. Their initial offering was called 55 places, the successful brainchild of founder, Bill Ness. Currently the company is over 50 employees (Average age is under 30).
Prior to agreeing to work with them, I was in a conversation with Bill and his partner, Danny Goodman. There was a concern expressed that our two day workshop might not be able to hold the attention of this current group. Words like “techie” and “millennials” were bandied about. I felt confident in our process given the amount of college-aged athletes we work with every year and have been working with for the past 30 years.
Of course, circumstances have changed, new ideas have appeared, technology has taken over, etc. However, underneath all of this are human beings who have been dealing with the same issue as always—SURVIVAL. Throw in the natural self-interests that drive our reactions and the entanglements anyone can have with their relationships and our (Todd Team Coaching) basic principles are timeless.
“So how was the week?”, you ask. Or not. New work relationships were created in the company and some personal ones as well. People that rarely, if ever, spoke up, did so. Old relationships were strengthened and new relationships were created.
One of the participants shared by email that he had spent the weekend with a long-time friend with whom he had completely lost touch. Their infrequent contacts had been spent bickering about everything. Using the BCT operating principles he had the “best time ever” as did his friend.
