Whenever I talk about the subject of respect I can hear Aretha singing in the background.  It is one of my all-time favorites.

It also needs to be an all-time favorite component for anyone in the process of building a championship team, organization, family, etc.  Without respect you have no chance of having a relationship with anyone.

This does not mean I have to respect everything about the person.  You dont even respect everything about yourself.  This, also, has nothing to do with your likes and dislikes regarding their habits or style or quirks as they go about their business.

They arent you.  Consequently they are different.  They grew up in different circumstances than you.  What a boring world it would be if we all thought the same way, anyway.

You might be wondering where to look to find something you can respect.  As I said, you do not have to respect everything about the person you just need one thing.

Find something they are good at and respect that  Anything in the area of skill, talent or ability will do.  How about them as a spouse or parent or son or daughter?  How about their commitment to their work or any part of their work?  It could be their sense of humor their hobbies , their accomplishments or their community spirit.

Some people in your life may make it very difficult to find something.  Do whatever it takes.  Any relationship where there is no respect is in the way of the teams effectiveness.

Having respect for someone doesnt mean you are going to hang out together.  It doesnt mean spending time with them away from work.   Those will be the ones that have similar likes and dislikes to yours.

If you dont have respect for someone I assure you that there is something.   We have to be willing to look.  Set aside your complaints, judgments and opinions for a minute and then take a look.  By the way, you might want to consider that your complaints, judgments and opinions are about you, not them.
