One of the most frustrating things for coaches, business executives and leaders in all kinds of disciplines is the inconsistent performance of their teams. Of course, this also includes individuals on their team.
The bookmakers in Las Vegas are well aware of inconsistency and, fortunately for them, they only have to figure out what will be the wager that will create interest on both sides. Our leaders are stuck a little bit with “I wonder which team will show up today?”
What is at work here? Performers know what it takes to get the job done. And, they basically want to get the job done. So, what stops them?
We are emotional beings. We don’t have emotions they mostly have us. Please don’t jump to the conclusion that we shouldn’t have them or that there is something wrong here. I am attempting to identify a couple of things that will help you and your team be more consistent. Keep in mind that before every decision you make there is an emotion.
There is no perfect system. Sometimes we are going to have a bad day. We never have the same body every day. You know you feel quicker, sharper, stronger one day and not so much the next day. That is being human. We are always changing and evolving. The aim is to eliminate the big highs and lows.
Here are a few things to pay attention to that will help you create an environment of consistency:
• No loose ends from yesterday before you begin today
• Create a primary purpose for the day
• Identify a clear outcome
• Practice your guiding principles (you do have some, don’t you?)
• At the end of the day, take five minutes to acknowledge your accomplishments.
Do what I am suggesting with your team, its individuals and yourself. Start each day fresh. By the way if you are wondering what happened to the Broncos … another time.
